Teacher Accused of Taking Student to Cemetery for Alleged Inappropriate Relationship
An alleged affair between a female teacher and a student has led to the arrest of Cali Heikes, 25, who is accused of regularly taking a 17-year-old student to a cemetery for undisclosed activities, according to authorities in Nebraska, US.
According to court documents, the Wayne County Sheriff Jason Dwinell’s office confirmed the arrest after receiving a call from a Department of Health and Human Services hotline, which reported suspicions of a sexual relationship between a teacher and a student.
A traffic stop conducted by a deputy over a week earlier had observed two vehicles leaving the area around the Winside Cemetery. One of the vehicles, driven by the male student, was stopped by the officer, who later noted that the other vehicle leaving the area was a black Chevrolet SUV registered to Cali Heikes.
Further claims by the student’s sister alleged that Heikes had been visiting the student’s house at night for undisclosed activities, with evidence provided in the form of text messages.
Additional family members reportedly disclosed that the victim had asked them for their opinions on his relationship with a 25-year-old, prompting investigators to seek a warrant to obtain Heikes’ mobile phone and other electronics for further investigation.
Despite the age of consent in Nebraska being 16, a sexual relationship between a teacher and a student is illegal due to the authority a teacher holds over a student, constituting a Class IIA felony with a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years.
Heikes posted bail on a $2,000 bond a day after her arrest.
