AFL star Kurt Tippet misses mark in bidding match for spectacular Hinterland prize home

AFL star Kurt Tippett lost out to an international buyer in a bidding match for a former prize home estate at Tallebudgera Valley which sold under the hammer for $4.35 million.

Former Sydney Swans and Adelaide Crows player Tippett, who recently joined the Gold Coast Suns board of directors, was the underbidder for the spectacular acreage property at 50-56 Gibsonville St.

Known as Belle Vue, the Gold Coast Hinterland home was the major prize of the Yourtown charity’s Christmas 2022 draw, and comprised a fully furnished luxury five-bedroom Queenslander-style house, separate fitness studio, and pool and firepit set among tropical landscaped grounds.

Two bidders registered for the on-site auction, including Burleigh Heads-based Tippett and his wife Chloe, and an Australian buyer currently living in Japan who bid by phone.

Apollo Auctions director Justin Nickerson fielded an opening bid of $3.5m, which Tippett countered with his first offer of $3.6m.

The two contenders volleyed a total of 11 bids between them, mostly in increments of $100,000, with Tibbett’s highest offer of $4.3m topped by a final $50,000 before Mr Nickerson called the estate sold to the phone bidder.

The five-bedroom, three-bathroom estate on a 5,680sq m lot backs onto picturesque Tallebudgera Creek, and was marketed by Talei Kelly and David Manby, of LJ Hooker Property Hub.

Ms Kelly said the vendor listed the prize home just six months after his big win, having purchased a property closer to family and his business in Brisbane.

Property records show Yourtown paid $3.76m for the house in November 2021 and enlisted renowned interior designer and The Block judge Darren Palmer to oversee extensive renovations.

Ms Kelly said the listing attracted strong interest through the campaign, with former Maroons Origin captain and NRL great Cameron Smith, also a Tallebudgera Valley homeowner, among those who inspected it.

“This is number 3 for me sold in this street in the last 6 months, and any properties which came to market here are always very well-received as Gibsonville is the premier street of Tallebudgera Valley without fail,” she said.

“This particular property had that wow factor — it had been newly renovated with a stunning twist on a contemporary farmhouse and was sold fully furnished.

“It is just a stunning home, and presents just as it did when the seller took ownership after the prize draw back in December.”

A total of about 40 people attended the auction.

The home’s renovation preserved the character of a classic homestead with wraparound verandahs, French windows and doors, and the quintessential white picket fence.

Features include apex ceilings, a cinema room or teenagers’ retreat, designer kitchen with butler’s pantry, upper level office, and a formal dining room opening out to a creekside al fresco lounge.

There’s also an outdoor kitchen and cabana, impressive barn-style shed to accommodate six cars, and a multipurpose studio which could serve as a gym, yoga or art space.

PropTrack data shows house prices in Tallebudgera Valley were up 15.8 per cent over the past 12 months to a median of $2m, which the suburb a popular destination for interstate treechangers and local families moving from the busier beachside strip.

Forward Tippett, 36, played 178 games for Adelaide and Sydney over an 11-year career after being drafted to the NRL in 2008.

He took on an assistant coach role with the Suns in 2021, joining the club’s board of directors last month, and has also forged a career in property and business development in his Gold Coast hometown.
